The aim of this project was to win the Future of Fish Feed Contest (also known as F3). F3 is an evolving global competetion based on sales volume of aquaculture formula feeds that are free of fishmeal and fish oil.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The world population is projected to surpass 8.5 billion people by 2030. Therefore demand for proteins will also increase. Seafood will continue to play an important part in meeting the global demand for protein. Farmed fish will play a key role in meeting this demand. However, currently feed used in raising farmed fish relies heavily on fishmeal and fish oil derived from pilchards. Consequently, if the consumption of fishmeal and fish oil continues at its current rate, it is estimated that those  fisheries will be depleted by 2037. This emphasizes the need for the aquaculture industry to develop alternative feeds that do not use fishmeal and fish oil.

Future of Fish Feed

Future of Fish Feed is an international organization dedicated to the development and promotion of sustainable aquaculture feeds to ensure a globally stable supply of farmed fish. Annually, F3 organizes a global contest focusing on specific themes related to the development and commercialization of sustainable aquaculture. In 2022, the theme targeted the development of Fishmeal / Fish Oil Free Feeds for carnivorous fish in three categories: salmonids, shrimp, and miscellaneous marine fish. Participants competed by showcasing their feeds based on sales amount. Our company participated in the miscellaneous carnivorous fish category, focusing on feeds for the red sea bream.

PROJECT OUTCOME

Despite failing to secure the top position in sales, our revolutionary achievement in developing a Fishmeal / Fish Oil Free Feed for red sea bream was acknowledged and honored with a special prize by F3. The significance of achieving a total sales volume of 15MT of this special diet in terms of the feed conversation ratio was equivalent to saving 37MT or roughly 2 million wild fish.
